Who we are
What makes Huon Regional Care special is our commitment to local people and local communities. As a not-for-profit organisation, every decision we make is guided by our purpose rather than profit.
What began as a small Huon Valley six-bed nursing home, Huon Regional Care have grown into one of Southern Tasmania’s most trusted community-based aged care providers. Beyond the Huon Valley, we also proudly support greater Hobart, Kingborough, Bruny Island, Tasman Peninsula, Clarence City and Sorell.
Older people are at the centre of everything we do – whether supporting clients to live independently on their own terms at home or taking a break using one of our respite options or being cared for in one of our three facilities. We always take the time to understand each person’s story, preferences and goals, ensuring care is tailored to individual needs and delivered with respect, compassion and kindness. We don’t just provide care – we build relationships, strengthen communities and help older Tasmanians live life, just the way they love it.
We believe in the power of relationships. Our staff, volunteers, residents and clients build genuine bonds founded on trust, respect and reliability. We pride ourselves on retaining and looking after our staff. For our clients, this means familiar faces and continuity of care.
A core strength is the more than 350 people working for us. From nurses and carers to hospitality, lifestyle, and back-office staff, every team member plays a vital role in providing supports where every older person feels valued and safe. Our History
Huon Regional Care was founded by Dr O T Kyle, who recognised the need for an aged care service in the Huon Valley. With the support of the community and the Huon District Eldercare Association, Huon Eldercare opened in Franklin on 5 July 1969.
The first stage included a six bed nursing home, seven assisted living units and a matron’s flat, giving older people in the region access to care close to home.
Since those early beginnings, we have grown into one of Tasmania’s most respected and trusted aged care providers. We now provide residential care in Franklin, Dover and Nubeena, and we deliver Support at Home services across diverse regions of Southern Tasmania.
Today, we employ more than three hundred local staff, and what began as a small community initiative has become a valued part of the wider Tasmanian community, continuing to evolve as the needs of older people change.

With more than 300 local staff and a growing team of 30 volunteers, we are well positioned to provide inclusive, respectful, culturally appropriate and reliable services across Southern Tasmania. Our strong local presence helps us connect with and understand the unique needs of the community.
