To access government-funded residential aged care, you will need an assessment through My Aged Care. This assessment helps confirm the level of care you need and whether residential aged care is right for you.

You can apply online or call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.

Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or apply online at www.myagedcare.gov.au.

Once registered, you will receive a My Aged Care Client ID. Write this number down and keep it handy for future calls and assessments.

You are welcome to visit our three residential aged care homes in Franklin, Dover and Nubeena.

You and your family can meet the team, view the rooms and learn more about daily life, meals, activities, outings and care.

After you apply, you will be contacted to arrange an assessment. An assessor will talk with you about your needs, your daily routine and your safety at home.

This usually happens in your home. You can have a family member or trusted person with you if you wish.

This can help you understand your payment options and make a decision that suits your situation.

When it is time to move in, we will welcome you and help you settle into your new home.

You can enjoy a safe and friendly environment, with support from people who take the time to know you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Huon Regional Care is a long-standing, locally owned, not-for-profit aged care provider in Southern Tasmania. Founded in 1969 by Dr O.T. Kyle as a small six-bed nursing home in the Huon Valley, it has grown over 55 years while staying true to its charitable, community-focused roots.

What sets us apart:

  • Three welcoming residential homes in Franklin, Dover and Nubeena (Tasman), plus home care and independent living — keeping residents close to family and the places they love.
  • Person-centred, homely care in a true “home away from home” with scenic views, quality rooms and dedicated local staff.
  • Culturally safe, trauma-informed care that respects all backgrounds, with a strong commitment to First Nations peoples.
  • Specialised dementia, palliative and sub-acute care, including rural health beds at Dover and Nubeena.
  • Over 115 residential places supported by experienced clinical and allied health professionals.

In short, we combine deep local roots with modern, compassionate care, so every resident can live life just the way they love it.

The first step is to contact the home directly (or book a tour) so our friendly team can assist you with planning and getting started:

You can also book a tour via our website. Our staff will guide you through the process, answer questions, and ensure you feel well-informed and supported.

Note: To enter residential aged care (permanent or respite), you will also need an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) approval through My Aged Care (www.myagedcare.gov.au or 1800 200 422). We can help coordinate this once you reach out.

Fees for our residential homes follow the standard Australian Government aged care framework and are detailed in our current pricing and room standard sheets (effective 1 July 2024; rates may change—please download the latest from the residential care page or contact us). Fees vary slightly by home (Franklin, Dover, Nubeena) and room type (Standard, Superior, Premium, Deluxe; some shared options).

There are three main components:

  • Basic Daily Fee (BDF) — Paid by every resident. Covers day-to-day services (meals, cleaning, laundry, heating). Currently $63.57 per day (indexed to 85% of the single-person basic age pension; government updates it twice yearly on 20 March and 20 September). Invoiced monthly by Huon Regional Care and paid directly to us. Applies every day you are a resident (including short absences).
  • Means-Tested Care Fee (MTCF) — An additional contribution toward personal/clinical care (if applicable). Assessed by Services Australia (or DVA) based on your income and assets. Ranges from $0 to a maximum of approximately $416.05 per day (with annual and lifetime caps). Not everyone pays it; the amount can change over time.
  • Accommodation Payment — The cost of your room, also determined by your means assessment (fully supported = $0; partially supported = contribution; unsupported = full fee). You can pay as:
    • Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) — lump-sum (refundable, less any permitted deductions).
    • Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) — daily (non-refundable).
    • Combination of both.

Examples of 2024 rates (effective 1 July 2024; contact us for current exact figures per home):

    • Franklin: Standard ~$450,000 RAD / $103.32 DAP per day; up to Deluxe ~$550,000 RAD / $126.27 DAP.
    • Dover: Standard ~$420,000 RAD / $96.43 DAP; up to Deluxe ~$550,000 RAD.
    • Nubeena (Tasman): Standard ~$375,000 RAD / $86.10 DAP; up to Deluxe ~$485,000 RAD.

(Combination examples and full room details are in the pricing sheets. DAP uses the government’s Maximum Permissible Interest Rate.)

Additional/optional fees: Lifestyle PLUS additional services bundle (approx. $12.95–$17.95 per day for self-funded/partially supported residents) and other agreed optional services.

How to pay: BDF is invoiced monthly. Accommodation is arranged via a Residential Aged Care Agreement signed before entry. Use the My Aged Care Residential Care Fee Estimator for a personalised estimate. Full details (including room photos/descriptions) are on our downloadable pricing sheets for each home.

Yes — if you have an ACAT assessment approving you for residential aged care. The Australian Government provides a substantial subsidy to the provider toward the cost of your care.

Your personal contributions (BDF is always paid; MTCF and accommodation fees) are determined by a means assessment from Services Australia (or DVA) based on your income and assets. People with lower means/assets may be fully or partially supported (little or no accommodation fees and/or no MTCF). We recommend contacting Services Australia or using the My Aged Care estimator for your situation. Hardship provisions may also apply in some cases.

Yes. All three homes (Franklin, Dover, and Nubeena) offer short-term respite care. It is a great option when you or your family need a break or when regular support at home is temporarily unavailable. Respite is booked through the same process as permanent care (contact us directly and have ACAT approval for respite).

We take a person-centred approach and support you to remain as independent as possible. If your needs increase, we can:

  • Transition you from respite to permanent residential care within the same home.
  • Adjust your care plan with input from our clinical team, GPs, and allied health professionals.
  • Provide specialised support for dementia, palliative/end-of-life care, or other changing conditions.
  • Use our sub-acute (mini-hospital) beds at Dover and Nubeena for short-term medical care or recovery (under contract with Tasmanian Health Service).

Our goal is to keep you in a familiar, supportive environment close to family and community for as long as possible. We will work with you and your family throughout any transition.

Yes. We offer specialised dementia care across all three residential homes, including secure dementia beds where appropriate. Our person-centred model, trained staff, and homely environment are designed to support residents living with dementia while maintaining dignity, safety, and quality of life.

Real Care. Real Peace of Mind.

Families across the Huon Valley and Tasman Peninsula choose Huon Regional Care because they want their loved one to feel safe, respected and genuinely cared for.
